Quick Takeaway: Risk, Reward and Optimism


This morning involved getting up early for an appointment,  having a full breakfast, and a planning and strategy session about how to reinvest a recent reward.

In retrospect, the reward would not have happened without taking risks and being open to and ready for opportunities as they came along.

So what’s the takeaway?

There is no reward without risk.   Also, optimism accompanies risk because you have to trust that all your efforts will result in success and that your outcome will be favorable.

Set Yourself Apart With Bold Moves

Going with the status quo is entirely too easy.  But for most, that is exactly the reason to do it.  It requires no effort, no inconvenience, no thought, no planning.  The requirement is simple; all you need to do is go along.

You’ll find that this approach will get you in the same overcrowded spot as everyone else who is doing the same.

This isn’t ideal if you’re looking to stand out from the pack.  If you’re looking to differentiate yourself, appear unique and turn heads, you will need to make some bold moves.

Now, bold moves are not to be confused with those that are intentionally controversial, because that isn’t necessarily the case.  In its simplest form, a bold move requires you to take a stand.  You’re not taking a stand when your contribution to a discussion is simply a reiteration and rewording of that from the five people who spoke before you.  In such a situation, a bold move can be a contribution that will make a difference, provoke thoughts, introduce a different point of view or present a different solution.

A bold move would be the type of move to turn one’s head.

Innately, we don’t have a very long attention span.  And that’s why most commercials are around 30 seconds long.  And that’s also why your elevator pitch should be concise and to the point.  After being exposed to what seems like more of the same, we begin to tune out.  And it takes a bold move to capture our attention again.

So what will be your bold move?  Is it taking a stance to do the right thing whenever everyone else is too complacent to care?  Is it suggesting a necessary change?  Is it upholding your ethical stance?  Is it saying no when you’re asked to do something that you know isn’t right?  Is it facing a fear?  Is it undertaking a venture that nobody else seems to be willing to proceed with?  Is it committing to professional development so that you exceed expectations and not just meet them?
